About Woods Memorial Hospital

• The hospital was named in memory to Carrie Alice and George Woods, Sr., at the request of their son, George Woods, Jr., a former Tennessee Speaker of the House from Etowah who was instrumental in establishing the hospital.
   
• Originally opened with 32 beds, Woods Memorial quickly grew to include a 44-bed nursing home (McMinn Memorial Nursing Home) and in 1972 more than doubled the hospital’s size to its current 72 beds. In 1992, the hospital again went through a major expansion with the construction of a new surgery center, renovation of the entire hospital, and additional 44 beds for the nursing home. In 1998, a new emergency department and eight-bed intensive care unit were built.
   
• With approximately 300 full time employees, Woods Memorial has a medical staff of more than 75 physicians representing numerous specialties.
   
• In addition to the hospital, Woods Memorial operates a nursing home, home health agency, emergency medical service, regional dialysis center, emergency department and other services under a single organization.
   
• The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
   
• McMinn Memorial Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center offers long term care in addition to skilled care for patients on a short-term basis. Patients who have suffered a stroke, been involved in an accident and others who need rehab including physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy are treated for specific time frames from 30 days or longer.
   
• The Woods Memorial Regional Dialysis Center provides renal treatments three days per week for an average of 45 patients. The Dialysis Center is located in the Hiwassee Shopping Center just south of the hospital campus on Highway 411.
   
• Woods Memorial Auxiliary consist of more than 40 volunteers who operate the hospital’s gift shop and provide juice and water to patients in the hospital as well as the nursing home.
   
• Woods Memorial has an annual budget of $37 million, and:
  • Has an average of nearly 1,300 emergency department visits per month
  • Performs approximately 800 home health visits per month.
  • Has an annual payroll of $11.6 million.
